Mindmap made by Hans Buskes & Jeroen van de Beek

Considering the period from 1960 up to now, who are the seven (we restricted ourselves to just seven) musicians or bands that had “no respect for the status quo”. This is our list (mind map). You may think different. Let us know.

  1. I loved the idea for this map. But I think you should change the term “innovators” to “influential”.
Bob Dylan, for example, is brilliant, but why is he an innovator? He basically started as a Woody Guthrie copycat who later became influenced by rock music.
The only names I’m sure you can call innovators there are Hendrix and Kuti. Hendrix created a new sound for guitar, Kuti created afro-beat. These are innovations.

I know it’s limited to seven, but I believe there must be room for Pete Townshend if only because of the Rock opera Tommy.

  4. no offense to the sex pistols but to claim the clash n jam to be under them is wrong.
they came out at the same time and might have come out earlier even

  5. Marc says:

Interesting perspective on the pop family tree. Difficult for any two to agree on every catergorization (Paul McCartney under fela kuti?, David Bowie under James Brown?) but the effort is interesting.

I think there ought to be an eighth .. namely either muddy waters or robert johnson to leave space for the rolling stones etc
